Lighter ceilings can make the walls feel higher, and darker ceilings make the walls feel lower. Painting the ceiling same color as the work works the best when crown molding is missing. Here’s an example of a dark ceiling and a light ceilings and a room without crown molding:
Painting the ceiling of a narrow room same color as the wall or as the counter top can make the space look not so narrow, see below:

25% wall color to 75% white technique Ceilings
Another technique is to dilute your wall color with white for the ceiling.
For months I’ve been afraid to paint my ceiling! After seeing this post, I feel inspired to pains my kitchen yellow exactly like the one pictured above.
