I’ve a guest post for you today! And, it’s on one of my favorite decor styles. This article is written by Jane Blanchard from Modernize.com. I hope you like this article as much as I do.
The mid-century modern style is showing a huge surge in popularity these days, and it’s no wonder — the style’s emphasis on open floor plans and ample windows fits with today’s modern family as well as it did back then. (And we can’t help but think a bit of credit is due to Mad Men.)
The term “mid-century modern” refers to the style developed from roughly 1933-1965. The architecture and furniture created during this time was concerned with opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in. Unlike previous design aesthetics, mid-century modern embraced function and clean simplicity.
Due to the popularity of this style, many companies are making reproduction furniture. Check out West Elm and IKEA for affordable and stylish pieces. If this family-centric style appeals to you, a great place to introduce it is in your family’s main living space. Here are six great examples.

This house is built with typical mid-century modern architecture. A light floor and wood ceiling elongate the room and pull the eye to the bright windows. The addition of plants, to bring in the outdoors and provide a pop of color, and furniture with clean lines finishes off the room.

In this example with modern architecture, a flat screen TV is accented with a low console. A modern take on a mid-century modern floor lamp combined with the gray color palette and accented with a few pieces of other styles, create an overall sense of mid-century modern.
Stripes and graphic patterns are a great way to bring a mid-century modern vibe to a room. The metal accents on the furniture and modern shelving around a simple fireplace complete the look.

In this more traditional room, a white wall serves to camouflage the more traditional architecture while playing up the furniture. A sofa with clean lines is complemented by an organic chair, and graphic and modern art work. Black and white stripes on the pillow, rug, and art tie together the room.

This room is a good example of how the mid-century modern style works in a home with a more traditional design. The built-in bookcases and fireplace are downplayed by the modern white color palette and the oversized sofa with a mid-century modern shape. A large potted tree brings a natural element to complete the room.

If you’re not in the market to replace all your furniture, this room is a good example of mixing styles. The furniture is a variety of styles, but the bold fireplace wall and off-centered arrangement provide an overall feel of mid-century modern design.
