Hello everyone! I’m thrilled to share my recent interview with FloorCoverings in my blog today. This short interview helped me pause and think about how I started blogging, our home decoration projects, and how I spent my time the past 6 years as a homemaker. At Floor Coverings International, we love bringing you insight and perspectives from designers. Today, we have an interview with Vidya Sudarsan, blogger at Interior Design Principles.
Floor Coverings International: Can you tell me a little about yourself?
Vidya Sudarsan: I am a wife and mom of two lovely girls living in Bay Area, California. I have worked several years in the computer industry where I have had opportunities to work with customers on a daily basis. I enjoyed solving technical problems, interacting with people, and building connections with others. Six years ago, I decided to take on the homemaker role – mainly to help with my younger daughter who clearly wanted me around. We had to make a few lifestyle changes, but I’m so glad that everything has worked out the way we wanted to. I thoroughly enjoy being around my girls and helping my husband grow in his career.
VS: Soon after I resigned my job, I started decorating our 60+ year old home – transforming one room at a time into an eclectic modern space. This led to the creation of my blog. Pictures and content in my blog have inspired me, and my home decorations have led to the focus of many blog posts. When I started blogging, I did not realize how quickly small entries on simple topics helped grow my reader base. I wanted my readers to call my blog a catalog of what they could do to transform their rooms into more charming and likable spaces. While creating these posts, I also realized, to my delight, that I was connecting with wonderful bloggers and readers from across the world. And finally, I am enjoying this growth spurt – my blog is growing at a scale that I never imagined. To me, blogging is a perfect (and fun!) platform to express my love for interior design.
FCI: You’ve been working on a world tour series of blog posts – writing about Indian, French, and Spanish homes. What have you enjoyed about this series?
VS: Our world is diverse and every style of architecture is unique in its own way. What I enjoy the most in creating such a series is bringing out the authentic style in each with utmost admiration to the settings. Whether it’s dreamy and romantic French or warm and cozy Spanish or colourful and detailed Indian, each is unique with a character of its own.
FCI: What are some of your design inspirations?
VS: Magazines, decor blogs, and TV channels such as DIY network and Home and Garden network serve as inspiration. I have probably watched every single show hosted by Candice Olsen, Amy Matthews, Danielle Bryk, Sarah Richardson, and David Bromstad. I find that these shows offer a wealth of information when it comes to interior designing. My favorite scene is usually at the end – where a snapshot of before and after is shown.
FCI: How would you describe your personal interior design style?
VS: My design style is a mix of clean lines and ornate details, with blends of earthly elements such as wood and metal in the rest of the decor. I love colors and adding feature wallpapers on just one wall. With all of these details, making a home cozy and warm is something that is very important to me. My style is also all about bringing out the personality of my family members with what we own and what we have collected over the years together.
