Capiz Shells

Capiz is a translucent shell that comes from marine mollusk a.k.a windowpane oyster. The name capiz is also a geographical location – a province in Philippines where these were originally found.

This is how they are found along the shallow waters.. they are gently collected, cleaned, polished, and sold in bulk. Each shell breaks into two halves and can be cut into any shape.

Capiz shells are ideal for lighting as it is semi-transparent, allowing light to glow through them. It also has a distinctive texture which enables light to reflect beautifully. Their natural color is white and they can be dyed to any color.

An inexpensive alternative to the real capiz shells are the Faux capiz shells that are largely in the market today. They are made of wax paper. I found this DIY on how to make your own Faux Capiz Shell Chandelier which costs around $30.00 to make! What do you think of this?

Capiz mirrors are also very distinct and elegant. Here are a few examples,

Finally, capiz looks the best in wall decor’s, jewelry’s, boxes, etc., as well. This is from my living room.. I bought this from Aracia Catalog online.. and I just love it!

The best way to clean these shells is by spraying a solution made with half ammonia and half water and letting the dirt run down. Do not to wipe these shells with a cloth.
